What Causes Shoulder Pain?
The flexibility of the shoulder joint does have a downside – there are numerous small muscles, tendons, and ligaments that can be damaged easily in the right circumstances. If your shoulder pain is not too severe, you may just be dealing with swelling from overuse. However, if your pain is more intense, something in your shoulder could have torn or become damaged.
Mild shoulder pain should go away within a few days. If your pain lasts longer than three or four days, we encourage you to come in and meet with one of our chiropractors.
Common shoulder pain injuries include:
- Rotator Cuff Injury – The muscles and the tendons in the rotator cuff are small and designed to allow refined movements and great flexibility, which is why a healthy shoulder can rotate almost 360 degrees. But any one of those muscles or tendons can be hurt due to accident, injury or overuse. When one or more of these soft tissues is damaged and causes pain/loss of mobility, the rotator cuff fails to work properly. Symptoms can include mild to severe pain, difficulty using the arm and eventually a loss of all mobility in the shoulder.
- Frozen Shoulder – Frozen shoulder is a term that describes the complete loss of mobility in the shoulder. When a shoulder injury becomes so painful that you stop using the arm, such as when you have a rotator cuff injury, eventually the muscles and other tissues will freeze up and lose all mobility. By not using the shoulder, it finally stops working altogether.
